You Think You've Got the Right, But I Think You've Got it Wrong

Yesterday the fabulous and wonderful Alicia, who lives just down the road, posted that her neighbor's magnolia tree was flowering.

My head started tick-tick-ticking because that's not a magnolia tree, that's a tulip tree.

So I was all set to leave her a snarky comment (which seems to be my calling this week, as I left Kirsten comment about what kind of sexual favor she'd want to get some of her awesome robot patches and she verbally spanked kindly reminded me that her mother reads her blog and would I please mind my language and why in fuck's name the world was my linky goodness not updated, because didn't she rock too? To which I replied of course you rock and quickly updated all of my Others Who Rock as to get out of providing any sexual favors for some patches because I? Actually don't swing that way. Sorry ladies), but before I did I decided to make sure I was right before doing so.

It's okay to make an ass of myself on my own site. But someone else's? Nuh-huh.

Turns out we are both right.

my neighbor's tree, Alicia and I both have awesome neighbors with good tastes in trees

These are in the magnolia family, also called magnolia saucer trees. They are also referred to as tulip trees.

Which gets rather confusing, because the lirodendron is also called a tulip tree. And guess what! It is also in the magnolia family. And guess what else! Alicia has one in her backyard!

Call me an excited gardening nerd. Learning is fun.

who's the pretty lilac? who's the pretty lilac? you are! you are!

I've been trying to document the garden a lot this spring, as I hope to plant a ton of spring bulbs this fall. And by fall my yard is a jungle.

friday lego love

Goodness...look at all those new links (and don't I feel special...and that's special in a good way) Argh...that tree is amazingly beautiful. I was just marvelling as I glanced out into the wet that has become Northern Arizona (yay) that it looks like all the plants have just sprouted up and the trees have all become a little more green...yay! I'm excited to see your garden.

And, I just love all the fun "words" you use, it enhances my enjoyment of the coffee squirting out of my nose and dripping down the computer screen early in the am! Rock on bitches!! (although I do understand if someone's mom may be offended...my mom hardly ever reads my blog, I'm just not famous enough for her...tee-hee)

You are too funny.

I loved Alicia's tree post and told her I had never seen a magnolia tree. Then she emailed back to say she wasn't sure if it really was one. Thanks for being nerdy and clarifying it!

Awww, I feel so special now that I'm added to the blogroll. :)

Ps. My mom never reads my blog so you can say anything you want!

I noticed the link-love as well and felt so freaking thrilled by it. Especially over the sexual favors part!

And I've always wondered about the tulip/magnolia thing, so thanks for clearing that up.

You rock. Love those Logo-boys.

I've never heard of that tree as a tulip tree. I always called them Japanese Magnolia, not to be confused with a regular magnolia, which happens to be my state flower.

Sheesh. Has to be all technical. and right. ;)

And the Tulip trees in our backyard are really nice. They drop lots of flower parts in the late Spring, but other than that they are tall and thin with huge leaves that make lots of nice shade on the patio.

There are few things I love better than garden geeks.

Just in case you were wondering, I don't swing that way either.

Does that mean that my unupdated link doesn't rock?? Am I the Country and Western link??? I'm on wordpess now! YOU rock, Capello, you honestly do. And I don't swing that way either but I'd even let you virtually spank me. Or whip me with a magnolia twig or something.

oh, my goodness - i can't believe you replayed our little 'conversation' yesterday!!

(and garden-nerd you are)

What?!!! You don't swing that way?!!! Fine!
Common names of plants are very, very , very, very confusing and overlapping. That's why they have that whole latin thing going on that nobody understands;) (I'm a botanist, I can say that)

It's a beautiful tree.

I was just out taking tons of pics of my magnolia today. They are so pretty. It took me a long time to start calling it a magnolia though -- I had only seen the southern magnolias with the big leaves, so it didn't make sense to me.

Ooh, lilacs are good. Ours isn't budding out like that yet!

I made a 'others who rock' blog roll. Yeah that was the highlight of a very long day. I guess I should update mine.

Lovin' the link. And wanting to express my pleasure in the freedom you have in blogging whatever the fuck you want! I didn't set out to be ladylike...in real life I'm pretty gritty. Really! But somehow I am catious with my blog, even though only one family member reads or knows of my blog. (Kinda closeted, I know.) I sometimes imagine having a parallel blog where I unleash my critic, express more of my struggles, release some toxins.

Inspired,
Patrice

Came over to see how your leaning greenhouse was doing. But got a little laugh in this am as well...love your friendly (it is friendly, right?) bantering!

You never leave snarky remarks in my blog... o wait, yea you are that capello dude!

You can call me Betty, or Bethany, or Beth ...Just don't call me late for dinner. said...

My mom reads my blog too..
But by now she wouldn't be very surprised that my pals make off color comments..

Hey. my Lilac tree isn't blooming yet and I am in California. What gives?

Those trees are so lovely! Nothin' blooming here, I tell you.
I only recently discovered that there was something called aquasaurs and I find them (from pictures, haven't seen the real thing) strangely intriguing and yucky at the same time. The thought of getting dry eggs in the mail, that can come alive in water, is scary!

And to complicate matters further - the Tennessee state tree is the tulip tree (aka: the tulip poplar) - which of course looks nothing like the gorgeous saucer magnolia you've got pictured..

and here in Georgia - that saucer magnolia is called a Japanese magnolia.

But we're not real smart 'round here....
