Anyway You Want it, That's the Way You Need it

I heart thrift stores.

Today the boys got some haircuts, which resulted (of course) in visiting some thrift stores we don't normally go to.

So I got...

... three embroidered pillowcases. Three bucks. And...

... new end tables! I got both for ten bucks (suck on that Pottery Barn)!

They are both in really good condition, nice and sturdy. Which brings up a new issue...

Should I leave them woody? Should I paint them? White or red (here's my living room in case you've forgotten)? Really, they are in such great shape I kinda don't want to paint them. Plus they kinda have some fancy pants enamel shit on them and I don't want to fuck with that.

What do you think?

(And a big ass THANKS! to Angela for the new banner -- I love it!)

We have two of those style end tables, but not as nice. I painted one for a bedside table for Aidin when she was little. All purple and white and girly. But I like the wood for your living room. Live with it for a bit and see. Because once the paint is on and you don't like it, it will be so much worse to try and get off.

And rockin' banner.

YOu kill me.
Pretty pillow cases & I'm digging those tables. They look like they are in great shape. I think (if they look ok in the room, I'd leave them unpainted...maybe.)
Glad you like the banner. It's cracking me up still.

and let them bask in their danish-esque glory.

i love the banner too! and i would say keep them like that and perhaps make a small runner of some sort to accent the colors. that way you can bring in some color without having to deal with that finish!

Wonderful new banner!
And lovely new tables... I like them as they are!

Ohmygosh! Those end tables are rad...ten bucks?!? I say leave 'em as is. You'd probably have to muck around with some serious chemicals to get the varnish off anyway. they look super great just the way they are. Great find!

Love your blog...always a fun read! My advice: I would not paint those tables. I used to be all about painting thrift store finds either black or cream but I am thinking that trend has peaked a bit. And to restore them would be awful. If the wood is in decent shape, I would leave them as is. They have a cool modern vibe just the way they are.

I say leave 'em. You can always make a little quilted runner thingy for them if they look a little too wood-y.

Or if you're me, pile lots of crap on them and you'd never notice what colour they were.

Top banner!

No paint! They are in good shape. After about ten years in a house with young children, you may want to consider paint. :) But for now, I like them as is!

Great banner, too.

Nice tables! And totally awesome banner!!

I think my inclination would be to leave 'em as they are, and revel in every bit of their mid-century goodness. But that's just me. (and remember, I'm lazy as sin, so that might be affecting my decision as well...)

LOVE the new banner - Angela rocks!

bringing in the minority. I say paint. Red. Just like the armoire. But, I'm a color junkie. :)

GREAT banner!

I saw leave 'em. Because they totally match as they are and painting takes time away from sewing!!! Or taking care of the turtle. lol

We had those same end tables growing up. Who would have thought they'd come in style again. Wonder what happened to them... So are you going to refinish them or leave them as is?

I'd paint them white....but they would also go in your lounge just the way they are! Like the new banner!

I am lazy as well so leave em woody good.

Leave the tables. If they've got that shiny smooth crap on there, which it looks like they do, they'll be a pain in the ass to paint. And then you'll be mad. Which could make a great blog, but...you'll get extra frustrated and wind up tossing them. (Not that I've ever had to do something like that. ahem.)
Back to lurkdom.

I am hiving some MAJOR table envy right now. Jealous I say! I have seen some around town but not nearly that nice, or I would have snatched them up! Dangit!

And the banner rules. I actually saw one of those signs once in Virginia Beach where cussing (as we Texans say) is against the law! No shittin' ya!

I wouldn't paint the tables either, unless you get tired of the wood look after awhile. And while I love the banner, I have to ask... is there really going to be no more cursing? Who are you, and what have you done with Laura???

How did I miss this before? I have the same entertainment center in my living room. Freaky!

You can use liquid sandpaper to coat the tables before you paint them. I'd go with a cream or a white. But I agree with the idea of living with them for a while to see what strikes you. It's like buying an off-white couch. You think it will work with what you have and your family, but the reality of it is that two kids, two cats, a dog and a husband who leaves his newspaper on the couch every five freaking seconds means your off-white couch will be nastified in approximately two seconds. And now you're stuck with a filthy looking couch that would only look great if it were in a furniture showroom that didn't allow children or newspapers.

Paint them, paint them! White and distressed...

Great new banner.

I like the tables. Can't decide if you should paint them or not. Or which color. I'm into painted furniture, so I'm a little biased on that issue. Red would look nice with your armoire, though. Hmmmm.

Another vote for leaving the tables as they are. Because of the style, I'm betting they're teak. Oil them with teak oil and love them in their natural state. Great find! You may have me convinced to go back to thrift shopping.

I am so jealous... which thrift store was this??? I think the should be left natural, but if painted, I say white. Really have been enjoying your blog, by the way.

Leave them as is. Who wants to deal with sanding them, so you can paint them. leave them. They are awesome, I can't believe they were only $10.00.

Like the new banner, made me laugh
