They Sing, "I'm in Love. What's That Song? I'm in Love With That Song."

The number one question I get asked is, what the hell is up with these posts? Okay. Maybe not everyone throws the hell in there, but I do. And we all know my foul mouth is part of the reason why people love me so.

All my post titles are taken from song lyrics. It started off innocently enough, occasionally using a song lyric or two when I posted, especially when I couldn't think of a title (titles are so overrated). Six months into writing here, all my posts were from song lyrics.

It was part "name that tune," part "I love music" and part "aren't I witty."

Which, let it be said that name that tune is my favoritest game ever. I can vividly remember my dad playing it with me when I was three, driving down the highway. My answers were always "Fleetwood Mac" unless, of course, I was actually Fleetwood Mac and then my answer would be "Kansas."

Between my dad quizzing me and the fabulous invention of MTV, I found something to fill my brain with -- music! Lots of music. Music, music, music.

As I got to be a teenager, my dad made fun of my taste in music (he was under the impression, given the way I was raised, I should only listen to rock; I listened to everything) and I was shocked to learn my friends didn't have a fucking clue who sang what. As I got to be 15, 16, 17 years old I drove everyone crazy with the name that tune game, and if someone did actually get the answer correct I started asking about the name of the album and year it was released.

Many people tried to bitch-smack me.

Aaron was the first person I had met that had remotely keep up with my musical tastes (and even he makes fun of me for listening to some genres, such as rap and country). And he does a pretty good job of playing name that tune, even if he never gets the album names.

And now, with a nearly-three year old and a five year old I am still obsessed with music. Griffin and Darwin can play name that tune a lot better than my friends in high school ever could. They prefer to listen to the Bloodhound Gang, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Jack Johnson and (yes, Darwin's still Absolute Favorite) Hard-Fi. We've tried those kiddie compilations and yeah, they don't work around here.

So, when my posting got to the point of massive overload of song lyrics, I decided I needed to post the information about the song and the last thing I wanted was to be thought of as plagiarizing someone's piece of work.

And if I could introduce others to new music, well, that rocks too.

Now, with well over 300 posts all with titles from song lyrics (and no repeats) it is far from foolish that I document the songs monthly.

You've got mad skills.

I am happy when I guess a few of your post titles each month. I definitely appreciate the obscure stuff. It's super cool that you're passing your skills onto your boy.

I have a friend who knows EVERY SINGLE SONG and the year it came out too. It's COMPLETELY freaky, but that's just because we're jealous. We can't do it so we make fun of those who can. lol

Oh and my son, if you ask him who is singing, he'll either say "Jimmy Buffett" or "that guy Grandma likes" (he means Rod Stewart).

Kids are SO FUNNY!!!!!

I have to say that your post titles are my favorite part of your blog. I love it when I know the song and who sings it. Especially the stuff from the 80s.

After I had the kids I kind of fell off the music wagon, but I still hang on to my MTV 80's songs with fond memories. I'm a proud Duranie.
My husband, although he listens to a lot of alternative now, knows almost nil about those formative years, apparently there was no radio or MTV on Maui where he grew up. Its no wonder he has issues.

The other day I mentioned Chrissie Hynde and he said, "who's that?" so I said, "Duh, The Pretenders" and he said, "who's that?".
What the?

You blog titles are always fun!
Does it take long to come up with them?

I love Tarzan Boy! LOL! I play along when I see a new lyric and try to guess the song. Sometimes I'm right, often I'm really, really wrong. But it's fun, nonetheless.

You rock! (heehee)

Yeah, no kiddie compilations here. Can't not handle small children singing unless they are my own.

Is it wrong that my kids really like The Donnas?

I always try to guess the song from your titles too. *sigh* I'm hardly ever right. Even when DH's latest fave song is Ruby.

I love the end of the month and listening to the songs.

And my kids never listened to kid songs either - they listened to my music. Oh wait, they still do.

Wow, this is the first I've hit this blog, and the first thing I see Alex Chilton?

This feature is just one of the many, many things I love about your blog!

Although - I can never decide if I like it better when the title is from an oscure 80's song, and I get it right, or if it's something I don't recognize at all - causing me to Google to find out what it is and then to the iTunes store to hear a fragment and educate my self....

I think it's super creative to be able to find things that relate to your posts...plus, I am enjoying all the new music I'm exposed to here!

Your diversity is amazing. And diversity is good. But you're not old enough to remember the REAL "Name that Tune" are you? Kathy Lee (pre Gifford) was the girl sidekick of that show. "I can name that tune in 1 note."

My college roommate was so musically inept (god love her) that we always made fun of her. Her husband plays "Beatles or Bee Gees" with her when a song by either comes on. She only gets it right about half the time.

When I first started reading yoyr blog, it took me awhile to work the title thingy out. I cannot name that tune, band or album ever. Well maybe once. It drives hubby insane.
